Next week is going to be a very spooktacular one. You’ve all heard about Halloween, but what about Dia de los Muertos? More commonly known as Day of the Dead, this Mexican holiday is quickly gaining popularity here in the UK.

In a large nutshell, Day of the Dead celebrates beloved friends and family who are no longer with us. Unlike Halloween which is based on ghoulish, ghostly goings-on that go bump in the night, Day of the Dead is all about celebrating death with in-your-face carnival-esque colour. I see Day of the Dead as Halloween’s camper, more colourful cousin. Typically associated with this quirky holiday are classic sugar skulls, altars framed with glowing candles and delicious food including favourite dishes of the dearly departed.

These tasty treats include pan dulce, a sweet bread dough peppered with aniseed, and pulque, a sweet drink with agave. If like me you find this too adventurous fodder (I am not a fan of aniseed and think it should be banished to the inner recesses of Hell), then you might want to go for something a little more accessible.

If you love avocados, or more specifically guacamole, then the Holy Moly Guacamole range might float your boat.

I find the act of buying avocados similar to playing Russian roulette. Will I, or won’t I get a perfect avocado so I can enjoy it slathered over a doorstep bread slice? There have been many times that I have “squidged” an avocado, for want of a technical term, trying to gage its ripeness, and although it felt perfectly ripe, when I got home, I discovered it to be as hard as the hardest plank of wood in the world.

Holy Moly Gaucamole eliminates that Russian roulette notion. It also dispels any awkward glances a stranger might give you as you prod an avocado.

Holy Moly Guacamole is vegan, gluten- and dairy-free, which is just the icing on the cake for those with follow these lifestyles.

I grill a thick slice of wholemeal bread (note – it will not fit in the toaster and anyway, the grill much better than any toaster), slather on Holy Moly Guacamole (spicy, always spicy), sprinkle with a few leaves of coriander, and serve with a steaming cup of coffee. Or you could pile over nachos, sprinkle liberally with cheese, flash grill it so the cheese is all gooey and golden, and enjoy at home whilst watching some scary movies.

Holy Moly Guacamole… how do you eat yours?
