What is your favourite cocktail? Whilst a brandy or rum will be my usual spirit of choice, I do love a Pornstar Martini or Rum Old Fashioned. Now, this is a bit of fun for those who dig cocktails; did you know that it is World Cocktail Day on Thursday 13 May? In anticipation of this, the good folks at Funkin Cocktails have researched each country’s favourite cocktail across the globe.

Firstly, who are Funkin Cocktails? They are my go-to resource for cocktail supplies, offering party packs, syrups, pre-mixed cocktails and purées.

Last summer during lockdown when I was missing my beloved Pornstar Martinis, I decided to take it upon myself to learn how to create my favourite cocktail at home. After a boatload of research (more Titanic size rather than a narrowboat that Alan owns*), I came across Funkin Cocktails. I bought their passionfruit purée and froze off some of the purée into ice-cubes.

Fast forward 12 months, and now, I can make a flaming brilliant Pornstar Martini just by diving into my freezer and retrieving aforementioned passionfruit purée cubes. I’ll see if I get time to post a photo and recipe on the ‘Gram, on World Cocktail Day, so do keep your eyes peeled @aperitif1.

OK, back to World Cocktail Day… Using Google search data, Funkin Cocktails were able to determine which cocktails were the most searched for from 115 different countries – showing which cocktail is any country’s refreshment of choice.

If you really wanted to get granular, you can also see the total worldwide search volume for each cocktail, giving the ultimate cocktail league table, featuring over 80 cocktails. Using this data, we can see that:

The Margarita is the undisputed cocktail champion of the world: with 30 countries claiming it as their favourite and around 546,280 searches for them worldwide per month – the Marg’s are in charge.

The classics are classic for a reason: The Margarita, Mojito, Pornstar Martini and White Russian made up 80% of the total favourite cocktails for each country.

Popularity isn’t everything: While the Old Fashioned, Bloody Mary, Sex On The Beach & Manhattan cocktails all made the top 10 of the world’s most popular cocktails – no country had them as their outright favourite!

What is your favourite drink? It could be a hot or cold beverage. Do you have a favourite pub / bar / beer garden? I would love to know.

*P.S. profuse apologies if there is someone called Alan who owns a narrowboat. I am sure your home is perfect. 🙂
