When was the last time you went to the theatre? I’m a huge fan of the arts and have promised myself to frequent the theatre at least once every month. Which is why I’m really looking forward to the Twelfth Night presentation by the Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company this week.
This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. The production is set around 1916 and while the first day of the battle was considered the worst in British military history, it was also an age of escapism – the music halls thrived and ragtime was in full swing. Popular songs were on everyone’s lips like ‘All the nice girls love a sailor’ and ‘Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile.’
Washed up on the shores of Illyria Viola disguises herself as a boy in order to find a way home and to discover the fate of her presumed drowned brother. On her journey she discovers a world of disguise and deception. A world where you may not be who you say you are. A world of hopes and of love, but as she discovers, if you live with your head in the clouds, strange things are bound to happen.
It’s a comedy of the bittersweet, melancholic, a comedy of sadness, illusion and delusion mix in a heady atmosphere of a lost world as it hurtles toward a desperate finale.
