A delectable theatrical delight is headed your way in less than two weeks’ time. When an international sportsman and UK Champion takes on the role of director in Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company’s most unusual production, you know it’s a blimming good sign.
Neil Scott has appeared on A Question of Sport and A League of Their Own and now, having got the acting bug, he is directing ‘Allo ‘Allo at The Guildhall Theatre.
“We chose a play to appeal to a wider audience and we hope the parallels between ‘Allo ‘Allo and our next show – The Comedy of Errors in July – will encourage people to enjoy Shakespeare as much as I have,” explains Neil.
Both plays are fast-paced romps with mistaken identity, husbands in trouble with their wives for flirting and there is even a Gestapo-like character in Comedy of Errors called Dr Pinch who takes away miscreants. Neil Scott’s plan is working so far with tickets for ‘Allo ‘Allo selling fast.
Meet René, the most wanted man in Occupied France: Women want his body. The Resistance wants his brain. And the Nazis want his sausage!
Based on, and from the same writers of, the highly successful BBC classic comedy; ‘Allo ‘Allo takes place in and around Café René in the French rural town of Nouvion during the World War II German occupation. Café owner, René Artois, is the reluctant war hero trying to satisfy demands from both the Germans and the French Resistance whilst having affairs with his waitresses and keeping his overbearing wife happy.
“I can’t believe how well we have been able to cast it and the rehearsals are hilarious!”
With some nights nearly sold out, Derby is rushing to see how Derby Shakespeare Theatre Company bring a classic comedy to life!
