The region’s bakers are invited to rise to the occasion at this year’s Bolton Food and Drink Festival and enter a competition to create the festival’s ‘Celebration Cake’.

The search has begun to find cake bakers to produce a unique, show-stopping cake that reflects the festival’s sense of fun and style, all whilst looking and tasting great.

Bolton Food and Drink Festival is organised by Bolton Council in association with Aldi, and takes place over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday, August 24 to Monday, August 27.

Amateur bakers of all ages can submit their ideas by e-mailing the festival team on [email protected] with their contact details, ability level and description of the cake. For more information visit:

Deadline for entries is Wednesday, August 8. Bakers must use a minimum of one Aldi ingredient in their submission.

A selection will then be invited to produce and display their cakes in the Albert Halls over the festival weekend.

The winning cake baker will receive a fantastic range of prizes, supplied by headline sponsor Aldi.

Judges for the competition include award winning cake artist Kay Gajra, Greenhalgh’s bakery boss David Smart, Aldi Logistics Director Virgil Simpson and Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Linda Thomas.

Cllr Thomas said: “Our festival has a strong history of show stopping cakes and this year it’s fantastic that we get to see what our talented audience can come up with.

“We are looking for a cake that stands out from the crowd, and that truly celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of the festival, as well as tasting delicious!

“I’d particularly like to thank our headline sponsor Aldi for the provision of such great prizes and all our judges for their time and expertise.”

Ruth Doyle, Aldi’s Regional Managing Director for Bolton, added: “The cake competition is a great opportunity for us to meet Bolton’s best bakers and to see what exciting treats they can create with Aldi ingredients.

“It’s really important to us to get involved with the community and the local food and drink sector, so what better way to do this than over a slice of cake. Bakers, on your marks!”

Throughout the summer Kay and her cake friends will be sharing their top hints and tips for the perfect cake and decoration.
