Number crunching with Holland & Barrett
Holland & Barrett’s research reveals the true cost of packed summer diaries is having a major strain on the nation’s health.
Driven by a wave of seasonal FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), more than a third of Brits (34%) confess to feeling intense, non-stop pressure to never miss an invite or turn down summer social plans with friends. Almost 30% feel managing their summer social calendar resembles a “second job”.
As a direct result of trying to keep up, nearly three quarters of Brits (70%) admit that a busy summer schedule negatively affects their body and wellness. The physical impact can take a toll – more than a third (34%) report that their summer social calendar leaves them feeling completely fatigued, 29% end up feeling physically rundown, and 29% feel dehydrated.
The pace is so grueling that nearly 1 in 6 (17%) fully anticipate their ‘social battery’ will feel completely drained by the end of July. Yet, despite the challenges only 29% admit they proactively overhaul their wellness routine when summer hits to support their body through the busy social season.
Leading health and wellness retailer Holland & Barrett advises that you don’t have to choose between feeling good and missing out on the action. The wellness expert is urging Brits to change the game by being proactive.
From supporting gut health after a string of barbecue spreads, resetting a sleep schedule wrecked by late-night matches, looking after your hydration and electrolyte balance during the summer heatwaves – which 58% of Brits admit makes it hard for them to socialise – Holland & Barrett is giving Brits the tools to back their bodies from the inside out with expert advice, targeted products, and simple wellness solutions to keep them running on a full tank all season long.
The Wellness Tap aims to show Brits how to recharge and refresh without hiding indoors. Featuring custom hydration drinks on bar taps (swapping lager for electrolytes) and expert-led wellness talks, the pop-up arrives just as more than half (53%) of people confess that chaotic summer schedules negatively impact their sleep routine and quality.
A busy calendar is blamed for knocking us off our fitness regimes (18%), disrupting healthy habits (22%), and impacting gut health (32%).
Lina Chan, Director of Missions at Holland & Barrett, said: “Summer is all about enjoying every single drop of sunshine. But let’s be honest, it’s incredibly easy to hit an energy wall before the season is even halfway through.
“Our State of the Nation’s Health study shows that 41% of adults reported a massive lack of energy over the last year, with summer heavily impacting this. We want to show the nation that you don’t have to compromise and miss out. By backing your body with a little wellness attention, you can say ‘yes’ to everything summer has to offer.”
