Why do you read? I love reading, the power of a good book has the magical ability to teleport you to lands far away.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah is an international bestseller which does just that.

This coming of age tale with heart, rooted in tragedy, sees 13-year-old Lena fight for a better future in 1974 Colorado.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

Constantly on eggshells around her violent, abusive father, yet keen to explore the heady first love who just so happens to be the son of her father’s enemy, we see Lena grow into a tenacious, spirited young woman, whose young life is marred with horror.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from the pace, to the oppressive setting that was beautifully written.

I love it when I discover a new author, I will definitely be reading more of Kirstin Hannah’s books.

The mad thing is, The Great Alone is not a book I would have picked up, but boy am I glad it was a book club choice.

I listened to the Audible version which is narrated by actress Julia Whelan. She brought all the characters to life, especially Matthew, which somehow made the finale even more poignant.

Some find the ending too twee, perhaps ‘nicely wrapped up with a giant bow’ however I think because the characters went through so much, I am glad they had their happy ending.

Anything else would have felt improper, wrong.

If you love beautiful prose and rounded out characters that you feel you know, I would heartily recommend this novel.
